Cleaning Your Gas Fireplace

Many homes are built using gas fireplaces now instead of your traditional real fireplace. There is always maintenance when it comes to real fireplaces but most everyone knew what it entailed. When it comes to a gas fireplace you might be thinking that I don’t have to do any maintenance to it at all. However, this is a misconception. Your gas fireplace needs to be cleaned and maintained just like any other fireplace. Handler Homes has installed many of these over the years in the homes we have built. However there are a couple of things that are going to be different when it comes to cleaning your fireplace.

Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning your fireplace there are a couple of different areas you will need to focus on. The glass is very important to clean because the build-up can make it hazy. Additionally you will also need to clean the ceramic logs. Your gas fireplace has a vent that is constantly pulling air into it. This means that whatever is in the air is getting sucked into your fireplace. If you have cats and dogs that shed a lot of hair then you better believe that it’s all in your fireplace.

The first step in the process is to remove the glass from your fireplace. Most fireplaces are the same for the most part and there are a number of videos that will explain the best way to go about how to take the glass out. Once the glass is off you will then need to carefully remove the logs from your fireplace. It might be best to take a picture of how it looked before so you know how it needs to be arranged again. For each log you will want to carefully brush the log with a soft bristle brush to remove any build up that has occurred. While you’ve got everything out it would be advantageous to do an inspection on your pilot light, fire box, and fan. Not all gas fireplaces have a fans but if yours does then you’ll want to make sure you give that a good cleaning too. Many fireplaces will have little rocks in the bottom so look at giving them a good dusting while you have everything out.

By annually cleaning your gas fireplace you will increase the efficiency to which it runs at. Handler Homes builds beautiful homes equipped with a gas fireplace so that on those especially cold days, you can flip the switch and snuggle up with a blanket and a good movie with the family.
