Making a Stress Free Cross Country Move

No matter if you are moving down the street or across the country, moving seems to always be a very involving and stressful process. Regardless of if you are moving because of a new job or just for a change of scenery, we have a few helpful notes in order to help make your cross-country move as stress free as can be.

One thing we all universally need is a place to live. No doubt your hunt for a new place to live should start before you ever arrive in your new city. To begin, you can start with a search online or contact a realtor in your desired location. Working with a realtor can prove especially helpful if you are moving to a city you are not familiar with, since your realtor will be. This way they can give you the information you need and guide you to a location that will suit you and your family based on the preferences you may have discussed with them.

If you do have children, surely finding a good school district is high on your list of priorities. If you are working with a realtor, they will be able to help you in this area as well. Just be sure that you transfer all your child’s previous school records, as well as medical records, to their new school.

When you first arrive in your new city, you may want to take some time to get to know it, of course. It can be lots of fun discovering food, entertainment, and other exciting things your new home has to offer. And while you are at it, be sure to also take note of the closest hospital in case of any emergencies.

Hopefully, you have chosen a place to live that is central to your daily activities, such as work and school. The last thing anyone wants is to spend their limited time with a long daily commute or sitting in traffic. Also worth noting is the fact that within a city there can be quite a few differing kinds of neighborhoods with varying pros and cons, and therefore it can be difficult to know which one has the best atmosphere for you if you have only been able to visit a time or two. If you are unsure of if you like the area you are in or if you are not, it is probably wise to rent before you buy.

If you have not already, it can be very insightful to take a trip beforehand to your new city so that you can get a feel for it before you arrive. This can aid in managing your expectations and prepare you for what to anticipate regarding weather, locals, and more. Once you get back home is when the bulk of the work starts. Packing. When you have lived somewhere for a while, especially in a larger home, we simply accumulate things. Many people do not even realize how much stuff they actually have. So, get started on selling and donating things you do not want and packing the things that you are keeping. Afterall, this process may take longer than you think, and you surely do not want to give things you do not even care for a free ride across the country.

Once things are packed up, it may take you a while to get settled in and find everything. So, be prepared and at least keep important documents like birth certificates and other forms of ID where you can easily find them again. Along with that, it may not be a bad idea to have a few of your previous utility bills handy. Some companies require these kinds of papers in order to turn on your new utilities in the first place.
