Pet Proof Your Backyard
Keeping your backyard in tiptop shape is important when you own a home but even more so when you’ve got a little puppy around the house. Handler Homes has teamed up with Faithful Friends Animal Society. We will be hosting a Paw-Party Adoption Event on June 2nd, 2018 at our two communities, Townsend Village and The Estates at Goldsborough Farm. Handler Homes wants to help the families who are planning to adopt as well as those who already have a pet. Here is the best way to dog proof your backyard!
First, you need a fence around your backyard. Once this is done they will enjoy having free reign to run and play as they please. Make sure that if you have a fence already that you go through and inspect it to ensure that there are no holes or broken areas. You want to make sure to keep your precious puppy inside and all those wild animals outside. There have been reports of coyotes attacking house pets. So, make sure your fence is high enough and secure enough to keep them out and keep your dog safe.
Many people love to plant flowers and gardens in the backyard. These are beautiful, and they smell great. If dogs can reach them, they can eat them. Prior to planting your garden, be sure to do research and ask your vet what plants are ok for them to “eat” if they happen to get ahold of them. There are a lot of different plants, and some of them can be toxic when ingested by your pet. If you’re an avid gardener, then make sure to put up a fence around them or make it a raised garden bed so that they can’t get ahold of them.
When it comes to the yard there is always a lot of work that needs to be done on it. Make sure that you keep fertilizers and other chemicals put up. When you do use fertilizers be sure to get kinds that are safe for pets. If you have a fire pit or pool, which require specific chemicals, keep them locked up. Pets are smart and will get into just about anything when they are puppies. This will help to keep them safe and secure even when you may not be at home. If you have a pool make sure that there is also a fence around it so that the pup doesn’t accidentally fall in.
These are just a few of the ways you can get your home ready for the puppy you’re wanting to adopt. There are many other things that need to be consider in the home itself. Make sure that you and your family are ready to take on such a responsibility as this. It is always good to get a dog door so that your pup always has access to the outside when he needs to go to the bathroom. If you’re looking at buying a new home or adopting a pet then join us for the Paw-Party on June 2nd, 2018, 12pm-3pm.
