Tips for Keeping a Clean Home with Pets

The families that choose Handler Homes come in all shapes and sizes. Many families include furry friends as well. And while of course we love our four-legged family members, they do present some unique challenges when it comes to keeping our homes neat and tidy.

Keeping a clean house when you have pets requires a bit of extra effort and regular maintenance. That’s why we want to share some tips and tricks to help you maintain a clean and pet-friendly living space.

Regular Grooming

One of the best ways to stay on top of runaway dust bunnies is to groom your pets regularly. Keep your pets clean by brushing their fur regularly to reduce shedding and prevent loose hair from spreading around the house.

Use Washable Covers

Cover your furniture and pet beds with washable, removable covers. This makes it easier to clean up pet hair, dirt, and odors. When you wash your bedsheets, you can wash theirs too!

Vacuum Frequently

One of the biggest banes of living with pets is that their hair gets everywhere. From rugs to couches. That’s why it is important to invest in a high-quality vacuum cleaner designed for pet hair. Vacuum your floors, furniture, and pet areas regularly to keep pet hair under control.

Lint Rollers and Sticky Brushes

Lint rollers may just become your number one sidekick in the fight to keep your home clean. Keep lint rollers and sticky brushes handy to quickly remove pet hair from clothing and upholstery.

Clean Paws

Pets can track in a lot of dirt if they go outside regularly. That’s why it can be extremely helpful to make a habit of cleaning their paws before they come back in. Place mats or towels near entryways to wipe your pets' paws after outdoor activities. This helps prevent dirt and mud from being tracked into the house.

Litter Box Care

If you have cats, scoop the litter box daily and replace the litter regularly to prevent odors. Place the litter box in a well-ventilated area. You can also take advantage of furniture that disguises litter boxes, so they are not an eyesore in living areas.

Training and Boundaries

Train your pets to follow house rules and boundaries. This can help prevent them from getting on furniture, entering certain rooms, or engaging in behavior that leads to messes.

Feeding Area Management

Place pet feeding stations on easy-to-clean surfaces or use pet placemats to catch spills and prevent food crumbs from spreading.

Remember that having pets is a joyful experience, and a bit of extra cleaning is a small trade-off for the love and companionship they bring. Consistency and a proactive approach to cleaning and maintenance will help you create a clean and comfortable living environment for both your family and your furry friends.
