Tasks Homeowners Should Do Before the First Frost

There are chores that are best completed before the first frost of the year. These are essential for homeowners to do in order to protect their property and ensure a smooth transition into colder weather. Here are some of the things all homeowners should complete before the first frost!

Insulate Pipes

A first is the first sign of colder weather, and colder weather can present a danger to your pipes if you do not prep them correctly. Prevent frozen and burst pipes by insulating exposed water pipes, especially those in unheated areas like the basement, garage, or crawl spaces. Use pipe insulation or heat tape.

Service Your Heating System

Another thing that you should do annually is to have a professional inspection of your HVAC system. They will clean or replace filters, check for leaks, and ensure the system is in good working condition.

Seal Drafts

Check doors and windows for drafts and seal them with weatherstripping or caulk. This helps keep warm air in and cold air out, reducing energy costs.

Clean Gutters

Next on the agenda are gutters. Clear your gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris to prevent ice dams from forming. Clogged gutters can lead to water damage as ice melts and refreezes.

Drain Outdoor Faucets

Don’t forget to winterize your outdoor water supply. Disconnect and drain garden hoses, and shut off outdoor water valves to prevent freezing. If you have a sprinkler system, make sure it's properly winterized.

Inspect the Roof

Make sure your roof is ready to protect you against the winter elements. Check your roof for damaged or missing shingles, as a leaking roof can cause significant problems when water freezes. Repair any issues promptly.

Store Outdoor Furniture

Make sure that your outdoor furniture is well protected and clean and ready to go come spring. Clean and store outdoor furniture, cushions, and other outdoor items in a dry place to prevent damage from snow and ice.

Prepare the Fireplace and Chimney

Have your fireplace and chimney professionally cleaned and inspected. Stock up on firewood if you plan to use your fireplace during the winter. This way it will be primed and ready to keep you cozy all Fall and Winter.

Reverse Ceiling Fans

And lastly, take a moment to reverse the direction of ceiling fans to create an upward draft that pushes warm air down from the ceiling.

By taking these precautions before the first frost, Handler homeowners can protect their property, stay warm, and reduce the risk of costly winter-related issues.
