Ways to Increase Home Safety

If you just moved into a new home, congratulations! Having your own space is so exciting. But if you are looking around your new space and realizing that the safety around your home could be improved, we’ve got your back. Here are some ways to increase safety after you move into a new home.

Test Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke alarms afford families precious time to take action in the event of a fire. It is important that yours is in working order. Make sure to replace the batteries in all your alarms twice a year. Many people like to replace the batteries when we spring forward and fall back on our clocks in order to remember this task more easily.

Your carbon monoxide detector is equally important to your family’s safety. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless danger that is near impossible to detect on your own. Which is exactly why you want your carbon monoxide detector to be in working order. Test it monthly to make sure it is in tip top shape and replace the batteries regularly.

Have a Lockable Medicine Cabinet

Poison control centers regularly handle calls from freaked out parents and pet owners. It's a common scenario, you look away for one moment and the next your small child or pet has consumed half a bottle of medication. You can avoid this from happening by storing all medicine and potentially poisonous items in a lockable medicine cabinet. For even more security, make sure to install the cabinet out of child and pet height.

Have an Family Emergency Plan in Place

A reality of the world we live in is that emergencies can happen at any time. Whether an emergency is man-made or compliments of mother nature, you and your family will need to know what to do in a moment’s notice. The best time to discuss what to do in the event of an emergency is before one occurs, not as one is happening. Make sure your family knows who to contact, where to meet, and have a bag of emergency supplies that they can easily grab in a hurry.

All these things can increase the safety for those in your household. And thankfully, all these suggestions are easy to implement.
