What Every Homeowner Should Know About Plumbing

There are times when hiring a professional to make repairs on your home makes sense. But there are other times that with a little bit of know-how, you can fix the issue on your own, saving you money and time. At Handler Homes we aim to assist homeowners long after we hand them their keys. That is why today we wanted to share plumbing tips that are essential for all homeowners to know.

Understand Where Your Plumbing Is

Knowing where all your plumbing is located is important. If you are planning on doing a little redecorating but are not sure if there are pipes behind the walls where you want to hang things, a stud finder can help. A stud finder is affordable and easy to use and can go a long way in helping you to avoid incurring costly plumbing damages.

Aside from that, it is also important that you know where your water valves are. When you first move into a home you should always familiarize yourself with where your breaker boxes are, hot water heater, and water valves. This way if you ever experience a leak of sorts, you can quickly turn off the water source before further damage occurs.

Avoid Over Tightening

When repairing plumbing it can be tempting to tighten bolts as much as you can. Doing so does not decrease the chances of future leaks but it does decrease your ability to fix them if they do occur. Over tightening easily leads to stripping and breaking of bolts and screws, making them difficult to work with in the future. Instead of over tightening, use plumber’s tape as extra insurance.

Careful What You Flush

A good way to avoid plumbing issues is to take care of your plumbing in the first place. This means you should know which things are not compatible with your plumbing. For example, grease and rice can clog sink drains and “flushable” wipes and paper towels can clog toilets. Be sure to place these items in your garbage bin instead of washing them away.
